Project summary

Our second project for intu involved the phased refurbishment of Lakeside Shopping Centre in Essex. Part of a wider redevelopment plan to extend and improve the existing shopping centre, it included the re-design of two existing entrances and a new link to the new extension, as well as a full refurbishment and upgrade across all services.

Bespoke lighting is used along with new architectural finishes, bright colours and decorative features, to make spaces feel bright and welcoming and to improve wayfinding. Internal textures and patterns are integrated with the external landscaping to improve the entire visitor experience. The main entrance has backlit structural glazing and we worked closely with manufacturers to reduce the size of the steels and to phase the works around the delivery of the glazed panels because of long lead-in times. The project included upper and lower malls and all public areas as well as additional M&E systems and associated infrastructure within the front and back of house areas. DMA worked closely with the main contractors, Knight Harwood, to deliver the project on time and within budget, sequencing phased construction around trading hours.
