Project summary

The brief required a new specialist teaching building for media and music to be situated adjacent to the existing buildings of this independent school for boys aged 3 to 13. Our proposal rationalises navigation and accessibility issues by creating a new collegiate courtyard at the heart of the school, which also gives the school community a clear identity. The new performing arts centre, an octagonal building at one corner of the courtyard, has drama facilities, bespoke practice rooms for individual music lessons and an open-plan space at the top for teaching and small music and drama performances, with views into the tree canopy. The proposal also includes a greatly enhanced landscaping plan introducing native wildflower, shrub and tree planting, as well as flexible play space and outdoor learning environments.
