DMA Liverpool enjoyed taking part as mentors in the PLACED Academy Summer School that took place at the end of July at the University of Liverpool. The 4-day programme is designed to engage young people and unleash creativity with a range of workshops and activities including drawing and modelling, interactive games and challenges.
Approximately 60 14-18 year olds from across the North West learnt about placemaking and developed a masterplan together to design their own islands, the results of which will be used to inform the Local Plan for Liverpool. They presented their projects on the last day at an evening event with parents, carers and guardians.
DMA’s Ana Dieguez commented,
The students did an amazing job researching and thinking about what uses and assets can contribute positively to their cities/communities and started to outline the design principles for their projects. With some fun team building activities such as drawing a team member silhouette, building a self-supporting tower and drawing an island footprint using rice, they were encouraged to think about the complexities of placemaking whilst also having a really good time.
