Project summary

This new-build, specialist laboratory is one of four life science buildings that DMA are working on with our client, Kadans Science Partner, in the Tileyard Quarter, a newly emerging innovation district within the wider King’s Cross Knowledge Quarter.

The new five-storey building is on a constrained site and we are collaborating closely with Islington Council planners to develop the design. The clean lines and articulated language of the elevations express the life science use, and materials have been chosen to reflect the industrial heritage of the area. The ground floor houses specialist facilities for small scale manufacturing, along with a welcoming, double height reception with large areas of glazing and a landscaped forecourt to activate the relationship with the street. A meeting room adjacent to the reception is for use by all building users as well as the wider community. The first to fourth floors are for lettable laboratory and R&D space and have been designed for maximum flexibility to suit different potential requirements in a multi-tenanted building. A communal terrace on the top floor along the rear of the building not only gives shared green space but also creates a valuable step back in the rear elevation, reducing its overall mass.
