Project summary
DMA put together a multi-disciplinary team to develop detailed, costed proposals for a new learning resource centre within the University’s campus in Childwall for this invited design competition. Our design reflects the ethos of Liverpool Hope University, which is known for its inclusive community-based approach, creating an environment for learning and teaching that is welcoming, uplifting and inspiring. Light-filled teaching spaces are set around a central atrium with generous shared space to encourage friendship and collaboration.
The double height space of the central atrium draws natural light and ventilation throughout and into the deeper areas of the plan at ground level. Green roofs provide thermal mass, the colonnade on the southern façade reduces solar gain and the CLT frame reduces embodied carbon. As well as improving the wellbeing aspects of the building, the timber finishes give a sense of connection to nature, blurring the boundaries between the external and internal landscape and the off-site manufactured CLT minimises disruption to college life during construction.
